Strategy

What's included and what's not

Getting the strategy right is the first step towards a successful programme and for a successful data migration project.

The strategy should cover not only what data is required in the new system, but also what are the potential sources of the data, who should be involved in the specification and execution of the migration, what tools will be used to specify and execute the migration, how long it is expected to take and how much is it expected to cost, and what are the measures to be used to confirm that the migration has been successful. All this needs to be agreed upon through the project governance model.

The terms in which the strategy is articulated should be such that they can be operationalised in the form of a plan and a set of deliverables that are clearly linked back to the requirements of the overall programme. This needs to be supported by a set of tools in which the practitioners can document the processing to be used to execute the migration in a structured and measurable form. The toolset should also support the translation of that specification into executable modules that can be managed in a transparent environment so that the results are visible to both team members and management.

For inspiration, Data Migration Pro, a community of data migration specialists, offers a comprehensive checklist.

Plan

Best approach to start

When you have a strategy – it is time to make plans for how to “eat the elephant”. As we, all know it’s best done in small pieces that you can manage. We are strong advocates of an incremental and agile methodology.

Start with something simple, extend it, and add complexity to it later. For this to be successful, the overall architecture of the solution needs to be understood from the beginning so the additional elements don’t conflict or undo the good work already carried out.

This way you make early progress, get a good feeling all around as you dig further down into the difficult bits, but also continue to progress towards your goal without having to rework. With a tool like migFx, you will not get lost and you will continue to have structure as you approach the complex part of the data migration.

The Plan should aim to establish good coverage before going into detail. Work in increments adding layers and detail. Make sure that all work areas are clearly defined and assigned. Include multiple – even daily incremental runs using migFx – validate and verify before moving on.

There should be a number of test migrations into the target system to allow business users to test the new system with their old data.,

Execution

Analyse and map data

The main task in any data migration project is to document the target system requirements (data fields, validation, dependencies etc…) and ensure that the source system (or otherwise) can deliver these data elements.

Once the identification has taken place, it’s up to the Data Migration Analyst to map the data, apply dependencies, and validation to ensure that the correct data will be delivered to the target system as part of the data migration.

The task can for a large part be simple. But for some parts not so simple, for others quite complex and in the worst case impossible. Sometimes the sheer number of data elements needing to be mapped makes it difficult to manage – at other times it’s the complexity.

We don’t know your business and data better than you, but we know how best to structure and apply rules and validation that will transform your data the way you want using migFx.

The result is that you progress faster, spend fewer resources, and get better results.
