Data Migration Strategy

Getting from a strategy to a data migration plan is the first step toward a successful data migration project.

What's included, what's not

  • What benefits that the data migrations are going to deliver?
  • Who owns what issues and the methodology/ approach?
  • How to decide, communicate, document and structure the work to be done?
  • How go get from strategy, over scope to the actual plan?

A data migration strategy should be articulated that can be operationalized in a plan, and a set of deliverables should be linked back to the objectives of the overall programme.

These activities should be supported by methods and tools that help the migration team document, process, and execute the migration in a structured and measurable form.

The 'toolset' should also support transparency from objectives to specifications into actual deliverables and evaluation or testing.

All should be managed in a transparent environment to make the results visible to team members and stakeholders

Best approach to start with the Data Migration Plan

Getting started with the definition of roles, first steps and apply an agile and iterative approach

The Data Migration Plan is the operational part of the data migration strategy.

Break the strategic objectives into manageable chunks of work so they can be executed over time given available resources and other constrains?

This is best done in small pieces that you can manage over short periods -  incremental and agile.

For this to be successful, the overall architecture of the solution needs to be robust and understood from the beginning so the additional elements don’t conflict or undo the good work already carried out.

In this step-by-step approach, you make early progress, get a good feeling all around as you dig further down into the difficult bits, but also continue to progress towards your goal without having to rework.

Start with something simple, extend it, and add complexity later.

How we work

We have worked on many projects over the last 20 years and have been faced with a number of challenges common to most migration projects and some pitfalls that were unique to each project.

FAQS

The main task in any data migration project is to document the target system requirements (data fields, validation, dependencies etc…) and ensure that the source system (or otherwise) can deliver these data elements.

Once the identification has taken place, the Data Migration Analyst maps the data, applies dependencies, and validate it to ensure that the correct data is delivered to the target system as part of the data migration.

The task can, for the most part, be simple. But for some parts, it's not so simple, for others, quite complex, and, in the worst case, impossible. Sometimes, the sheer number of data elements needing to be mapped makes it difficult to manage—at other times, it’s the complexity.

Complex data migration is a highly specialised area. Not having the right software tool and people to use it will cost you time and money and, in many cases, result in poor quality.

Our experts can help you install and configure hopp and save you the need to build tools yourself. Your team will do the job, but we are available to assist you with any mapping challenges that might arise as part of your data migration.

We even have integrated our tools with a number of popular ERP systems potentially saving you months of development work.

  1. You need to know your business and the data it relies on
  2. What you expect from your new systems
  3. also great if you understand how and where your data is stored.

We don’t know your business and your data better than you!

We know how best to structure and apply rules and validation that will transform your data so the meet the target systems requirements using hopp software. More important we can teach your team to do the same.

The result is that you progress faster, spend fewer resources, and get better results.
